Michael let out a whoop as he slammed the car door shut, the sound echoing in the crisp autumn air. He bounded towards the house, eager to get inside and prepare. He was ready for the celebration tonight. He felt like he was floating.

A notification pinged on his phone. He paused, his smile fading. It was from his friend, Chris. The message was succinct, his words making Michael’s gut twist.

“Party’s cancelled. Sorry. Something came up.”

The buoyant sensation in his chest deflated. He stood there, the crisp air suddenly feeling cold. He slowly turned toward his car, the anticipation replaced by a heavy disappointment.
