A lightness danced in Mark's step as he bounded through the park, a small, brightly wrapped gift clutched in his hand. He whistled as he approached the picnic spot he'd prepared, a blanket spread beneath a sprawling oak tree. He pictured Sarah's reaction, her laughter a sound he cherished above all others. This date, he'd told himself, would be the one.

He saw her then, seated and facing away from him. A man was approaching her. His blood went cold. He approached, but the man had already embraced her, and she hugged him back.
