He whistled a jaunty tune as he folded the laundry, a task he usually loathed. The scent of freshly laundered linen filled the air, mingling with the aroma of coffee brewing in the kitchen. A wide, carefree grin stretched across his face, revealing teeth he rarely bothered to show. It felt as if his skin buzzed with an internal energy.

His phone buzzed. A notification: a new email from the support group for people with his condition. He almost deleted it, then curiosity got the better of him. He opened it and his breath hitched. Another member, a woman, had just posted about experiencing the same odd, specific symptoms as him.

He clicked on the link to her profile. Her avatar was a selfie of a woman with a smile that could melt glaciers. He felt a jolt, a strange flicker of… something. He found himself hitting reply, typing with a speed he didn’t know he possessed.
