The phone rang, and Leo practically leaped across the room to answer it. It was his sister, calling to congratulate him. He felt lightheaded. She hadn’t been calling to congratulate him about anything specific, but she was always the first to know the details of his private life.

He knew what his girlfriend, Chloe, had been hiding from him. He found a draft of her novel, a first edition. A chapter, a sentence, and then another. It was about him, about their relationship, about all that they had been and could be.

He felt like singing, like dancing. He sat and stared out the window, watching the world go by. His muscles seemed to have loosened. Then, there was a knock at the door, and he almost fell over himself rushing to open it.
