The email notification blared, a digital siren announcing the injustice. He didn't even bother to read the content, just the subject line was enough: "Salary Review - Sarah Jones." His stomach twisted into a knot.

He felt the familiar burn creeping up his neck, the flush of his own frustration. He considered, briefly, the possibility of an accident involving the communal coffee pot.

Later, he purposefully neglected to offer Sarah any assistance on the new report, even though he knew she was struggling. He focused, instead, on his own tasks, muttering under his breath about the unfairness of it all. He savored the silence.
