The office felt cold, even with the thermostat cranked up. The knowledge gnawed at him, a persistent pain in his gut. He had worked his way up the ladder, step by painstaking step, while she had practically teleported to the top.

He found himself actively avoiding her, a childish, petty act. He would duck into the breakroom the moment he saw her approaching, feigning an interest in stale donuts.

During the next performance review, he was curt with her when he had to speak. His recommendations were cold, and his face was rigid. He made a point of emphasizing her areas for improvement, no matter how small. He hated the way she'd gotten ahead.
