The stale air in the elevator thickened, mirroring the growing resentment churning in Maria. She watched, with undisguised distaste, as Ben tapped his foot impatiently. The sheer audacity of his frustration was infuriating.

He hadn't stopped talking, either. Rambling about some presentation he was supposed to give. Every word was like a tiny, deliberate jab at her. He spoke as though he was the only one that mattered.

Maria crossed her arms, the action a deliberate barricade. She’d always found him to be a pompous blowhard, and this enforced intimacy only magnified her disgust. She wanted to shove him away, to silence the incessant drone of his voice. She bit back a curt response.
