The humid air of the solicitor's office felt thick with unspoken resentments. Sarah tapped her perfectly manicured nails against the mahogany table, each click a tiny act of defiance. Across from her, David, her brother, beamed, his smile a blinding affront. Their father's will had been read, and the division was…uneven. A sprawling estate, a trust fund…all for David. Sarah, a paltry sum and a box of old photographs.

She barely registered the solicitor’s droning voice, the details of David’s windfall a dull ache in her chest. Her stomach clenched. A wave of nausea rolled over her. She excused herself, the solicitor's polite inquiry about her well-being a sound she wanted to shut out.

Back in her car, the engine roared to life as she stabbed at the ignition. David's smug face, the smugness she always felt he carried, flashed behind her eyelids. She gripped the steering wheel so tight her knuckles turned white. She'd get him back.
