She walked back inside, the slam of the door a violent punctuation mark. She had tried, she had really tried. The empty space felt like a betrayal. His betrayal.

She reached for the whiskey bottle, the amber liquid shimmering in the dim light. She poured a generous amount, the ice clinking loudly as she dropped it into the glass.

Each swallow burned a path down her throat, but it offered no relief. The loss, the loneliness, the feeling of utter desolation clawed at her insides.

She had given him everything. And for what? Now, the car was gone, and so was he.
