He stared at the box, the lid slightly ajar, revealing a jumble of familiar things. He'd never understood his mother's meticulous nature, her need to hold onto everything. Now, faced with this overwhelming collection of his past, he realized the depth of her devotion. Every painstakingly graded paper, every hand-drawn card, every school project – a monument to his existence. He knew, despite her words, she cared.

His vision blurred as he scanned a hand-written note, written in his own, sloppy handwriting, that stated "I love you mom". He remembered the occasion, a birthday. His throat tightened, and he had to fight for breath. He sat down heavily in a nearby chair, his body feeling like lead.

The house seemed too quiet, too empty, even though he knew he was not truly alone. He clenched his fists, knuckles white. The papers, usually comforting in their familiarity, now seemed to mock him.
