The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air as she sifted through the boxes. Each assignment, each drawing, each scribbled note, was a tangible piece of her childhood, meticulously preserved. Her mother, a woman of few words, had expressed her love in the quiet acts of preservation. Now, with a tremor in her hands, she felt a different kind of ache.

She held up a finger painting, a messy swirl of colors, and remembered the sticky sweetness of the paint and her mother's gentle smile. The memory brought an onslaught of emotion, a wave threatening to overwhelm her. The silence in the house pressed down on her, heavy and suffocating.
