The coffee shop was suddenly too bright, the chatter of other customers too loud. Michael felt a raw wound opening inside him, a deep sense of wrongness. He'd been so sure, so convinced. The vibrant life he’d planned, the future he’d sketched out with such hopeful strokes - now felt utterly tainted. He reread the corrected file, each word a condemnation. He slammed his coffee cup down, the sudden noise shocking even himself. The beautiful day outside held no allure. He was a fraud, a ghost in his own life, and the knowledge threatened to utterly consume him.
