"This is it, then," she'd whispered to the empty house that morning. Now, standing amidst stacks of boxes, she felt a profound sense of isolation. The walls seemed to close in, each tick of the grandfather clock in the foyer a painful reminder of time passing without him. Her attempts to create a new routine seemed flimsy and futile.

She'd been exploring the attic, hoping to find something, anything, to distract her. She stumbled upon a panel that seemed out of place. It blended seamlessly with the wall, but when she pressed on it, the sound was hollow. It gave way with a soft creak, revealing a small, rectangular opening.

A wooden ladder led downwards. Hesitantly, she began to climb down. The smell of cedar hung in the air, and she found herself in a small room. The light from her phone barely reached the corners, and the silence was suffocating.
