He stared at the untouched boxes. He couldn't bring himself to unpack, each item a sharp stab of memory. The house, their house, now felt like a prison. He spent most days staring out the window, watching the world move on while he remained stuck in a static, frozen moment.

He was aimlessly wandering through the basement when he stubbed his toe on a loose brick. Irritated, he bent down to examine it. It came loose with surprising ease, and behind it, he found a small, dark cavity. He reached in, feeling around.

His fingers brushed against something metallic. He pulled it out, a small, tarnished key. Following the vague sensation of the door, he located it in the attic. He twisted the key, and the attic door swung open.
