He felt like a stranger in his own home. The joy, the comfort, the sense of belonging – all had vanished. He moved through the rooms like a ghost, his actions mechanical, his spirit dimmed. Each sunrise brought the same hollow ache.

He'd been trying to get the fireplace to work, hoping the warmth would offer some solace. He was inspecting the chimney when he noticed a loose brick. He pulled it out, and felt a draft. Peering inside, he saw a dark opening.

The opening led to a small, hidden room. Inside, a collection of old letters lay scattered across a small table. He picked one up, his hand trembling. The words blurred before his eyes.
