Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows of the student union, mirroring the storm brewing inside Maya. She'd just been called in by the financial aid office, a summons that had felt ominous even before the administrator had started speaking. The words, "Clerical error," and "Ineligible recipient," now echoed in her ears. Her scholarship, the lifeline that allowed her to study literature, was going to someone else.

She walked towards the library, the familiar scent of old books doing nothing to soothe the tightness in her chest. Every step felt heavy, like she was wading through molasses. She slumped into a chair by a window, staring unseeingly at the blurred cityscape. Doubt clawed at her, a cold tendril wrapping around her resolve. Was she not good enough? Had she imagined her dreams?

A tear, unbidden, escaped her eye, tracing a hot path down her cheek. She scrubbed at it angrily, the gesture only smearing the wetness. Her future, once so clear, now shimmered, fragmented, beyond her reach. She wanted to scream, to shatter something, anything, just to release the pressure building within her.
