The cat wouldn’t come near him. It’s usually his constant companion, following him around the house, but not today. Ben felt empty. He’d read Finch every day. He needed the stories. They filled a space inside.

He picked up his old copy of Finch’s first book. It was dog-eared and worn, a testament to countless readings. He opened it, then slammed it shut. He shoved it away, as if it was a disease.

He sat on the couch, staring at the blank television screen. The apartment felt too big, the silence too loud. He didn't know what to do. He felt adrift. He had nowhere to go.
