He scrolled through his phone, looking at old photos. He'd been looking for a spark of recognition, a sign. He found her at a local farmers market, her face lit by the morning sun. He hesitantly approached, bracing himself.

“Hey, Sarah, remember that time…?” he started, the memories flooding back to him.

She looked up, squinting against the light. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I know you.” She turned away. His vision blurred.

He wandered through the stalls, the aroma of fresh produce doing nothing to soothe the ache in his chest. He felt a suffocating loneliness, an inescapable chasm. The sun, once warm, now felt cold on his skin.
