The cold seeping into her shoes matched the chill that ran through Eleanor’s core. She sat on the floor, legs drawn up to her chest, her arms wrapped around her knees. Her co-worker, Robert, had attempted to cheer her up by telling some jokes, but the effort seemed to fall flat. She had just left a meeting where she had been forced to declare bankruptcy.

The world seemed to spin.

She watched Robert’s shadow dance on the elevator doors, a blurry silhouette in the dim light. She wished she could just disappear.

The words of the meeting still burned in her mind. Her entire life's work, gone. Her dreams, shattered. She closed her eyes, the familiar weight of despair settling over her like a shroud.
