The only sound in the elevator was the slow, rhythmic beat of David's tapping foot. He was pacing, muttering something about the electrical system. He was a professional, but she felt as though her professional life was over. Three months ago, she was the head manager. Now, she was nothing more than an assistant.

She tried to focus on his words, hoping the distraction would help her forget her meeting earlier. But every thought seemed to return to her. The conversation she'd had with the boss. The crushing weight of his words.

She sat on the floor and stared at the elevator's ceiling, feeling a profound sense of loss, like a limb had been amputated. She wanted to scream. She wanted to disappear. Instead, she just sat there, frozen in place, a statue of sadness.
