The parchment crinkled in Amelia’s trembling hand. Sunlight streamed through the dusty attic window, illuminating the words that had arrived after nearly two decades. The carefully scripted apology, penned by a woman she hadn't seen since that summer, felt like a physical blow. A wave of nausea rolled over her, forcing her to clutch at the nearby trunk for support. Her chest felt constricted, as if a vise was slowly tightening. She slowly sank to the floor, the letter falling from her numb fingers.

She re-read the words again, each one a sharp jab to her core. Regret, remorse, the promise of a friendship she'd longed for but never had. The pain of the past, a dull ache that she had learned to live with, suddenly flared again, raw and exposed. She pressed her fingers against her temples, trying to ward off the onslaught of memories.
