“This can’t be real,” David muttered, the words a desperate plea into the phone. His sister's voice, usually a source of comfort, sounded distant, the news reverberating in his ears. He hung up and stood frozen, the phone still clutched in his hand. He’d poured his heart into this place. He'd imagined graduating, walking across the stage, a proud smile on his face. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee, to run as far and as fast as he could. He let out a choked sound, a strangled sob escaping his lips.
