He saw the old woman approaching, her face wrinkled, her eyes twinkling with kindness. She asked if she could use a small section for a vegetable patch. He almost refused, the request igniting a fire of anger in him. It felt like an assault, this casual disregard for the gaping hole in his life. He grunted an assent.
