Michael drummed his fingers on the worn wooden table, a nervous rhythm that echoed the rapid beat of his heart. The phone had been silent for two days. He'd envisioned himself in that office, the natural light streaming through the windows, the view of the city sprawling below.

He imagined the office's interior. He imagined himself already working with the team. He pictured the future he'd carve out for himself within that building.

His friend, Alex, had applied for the same position. They’d joked about it, but now Michael couldn't shake the feeling that Alex had a better chance. He suddenly felt the need to clean the entire apartment - every surface, every corner. His hands were shaking by the time he finished.
