The garage was a mess. Years of accumulated clutter – broken lawnmowers, paint cans, forgotten toys – filled every corner. Liam had almost given up on finding his old essays, written during the troubled years when his father was ill. His mother, bless her heart, had always been a keeper of everything, though.

He kicked a rusty can and nearly missed a cardboard box tucked under a workbench. His name was scrawled across the top, in the familiar handwriting. He opened it, his heart quickening.

The first essay was about the importance of family. He read it, and the words resonated with a newfound significance. A sudden warmth washed over him, a sensation of being both seen and loved. He sat back, utterly content, amidst the grime and the forgotten.
