The vet’s waiting room was bustling with activity. The air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and nervous energy. Daniel sat beside Liam, fiddling with a pen. He was trying to gauge Liam’s mood. Liam had agreed to come for the consultation with a reluctant sigh, and Daniel had no idea whether it was a good or bad sign.

A woman was explaining how to groom her dog. Daniel leaned forward slightly, listening intently to the instructions. He could almost see the soft fur between his fingers. He imagined a warm creature, a furry friend waiting for him at home.

Liam cleared his throat, and Daniel turned toward him, his heart quickening, but his mind was already made up.
