The cat yawned, stretching languidly across the sofa, completely unbothered by the tense atmosphere. Emma saw this and smiled. Their disagreement over getting a cat was the latest in a series of arguments, but this time felt different.

Liam had been avoiding eye contact, muttering about the cost and the inconvenience. But today, he had actually said he liked the cat, even though he had just met it. He was slowly, gradually, inching his way closer to the cat on the couch.

Her breath caught in her throat as Liam gingerly reached out a hand and began to stroke the animal's back. He looked relaxed. She held her breath and wanted to believe that this was a good sign.
