The email arrived mid-afternoon, nestled amongst the usual junk and departmental memos. Sarah reread the subject line: “Dr. Elara Vance: Departure Announcement.” A little skip started in her chest. She scrolled through the text, her fingers tapping against her desk. Elara was leaving? To take a position at a research institute in Iceland? Excitement began to bubble, warm and effervescent. Perhaps this was the catalyst she needed. A fresh start. A new perspective. She could finally shake off the feeling of being in a holding pattern. The air in the office felt suddenly charged, the fluorescent lights humming a little louder.
