Gemotions

A tremor ran through Leo’s hands as he unsealed the thick, parchment envelope. He smoothed it against the worn oak table in the dusty attic. Sunlight, fractured by the grimy windowpane, illuminated motes of dust dancing in the air. His sister, Clara, sat beside him, nervously chewing on her thumbnail. They’d argued for weeks about this – the reading of their late grandmother’s will. Leo imagined a small cottage, a modest sum to see them through. He imagined a future.

He unfolded the document. The elegant script, a familiar comfort from his grandmother’s letters, swam before his eyes. It detailed a small, unassuming vineyard in Tuscany. The notes included detailed instructions on the care of the land.

Leo turned to Clara. Her eyes were alight. She already was drafting plans. He started to laugh. They had a reason to go on.
