The doorbell rang, a sharp sound that sliced through the quiet afternoon. Mr. Evans opened the door to find a woman standing there, holding a small, brown paper bag. She smiled at him, a warm and familiar smile. It was Sarah, a student who had always been a challenge, a whirlwind of energy and rebellion. He'd spent countless hours trying to reach her, to guide her. She'd graduated years ago.

"This is for you," she said, her voice soft. "It's a little something."

Inside the bag was a homemade loaf of bread, still warm and fragrant. Mr. Evans inhaled the aroma, his mouth watering. Sarah knew he loved freshly baked bread. On a small, attached note, in neat, careful handwriting, she'd written, "Thanks for not giving up on me."

He brought the bread inside, placing it carefully on the kitchen counter. He wanted to eat it right away. His shoulders felt straighter. He felt a quiet, internal humming.
