Liam straightened his tie, a small, involuntary smile playing on his lips. Today was the day. He’d saved for months, scrimped and saved, and now, finally, he was ready. He'd seen the advertisement, a blurry photograph, but the description…the description was unmistakable. His grandmother's ring. The one she’d always shown him as a child, shimmering in the sunlight.

He entered the pawn shop, the air thick with the smell of old metal and forgotten dreams. He greeted the shopkeeper with a genuine smile, a lightness in his step. "I saw your advertisement," he began, his voice surprisingly steady. "The ring, the one with the ruby?" The shopkeeper, a woman with kind eyes, nodded.

When she produced it, Liam’s breath hitched. He examined the intricate carving, the way the light danced on the ruby's facets. He could see his grandmother’s face, etched with a delighted grin. He would be able to give this ring to his girlfriend.
