The city skyline shimmered in the late afternoon sun, casting long shadows across the park. Daniel walked towards the small cafe, a bouquet of her favorite lilies clutched in his hand. He was going to surprise Maria. He envisioned a cozy evening, a casual dinner followed by a walk by the river. It felt like something new, a fresh start.

He saw her sitting at a table near the window, her face illuminated by the warm light of the cafe. She was on the phone, her hand placed over the phone, whispering. He started to wave, but then he hesitated. He wanted to hear her voice, in person, not muffled by the silence of the room.
