The air smelled of woodsmoke and autumn leaves. Leo gathered firewood, his movements brisk and efficient. They had planned a bonfire tonight, a simple gathering with friends. He had found the perfect spot by the lake, and could already imagine the warmth of the fire and the laughter that would fill the air. He had been looking forward to a relaxed evening with Maya for months now.

He glanced towards the house, hearing Maya's voice, her tone too soft to distinguish the words. He paused in his task, a sense of something unfamiliar building inside him. She was clearly in a hurry. He cleared his throat and continued gathering wood.
