The rain had stopped just as Maya pulled into the driveway. She grinned, the setting sun painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and pink. Tonight, she was going to propose to Daniel. She clutched the small velvet box in her pocket, the weight of it a thrilling secret. She envisioned a lifetime together, building a family, sharing adventures. She pictured his face when he opened the box. She practically vibrated with excitement.

She opened the door, her heart doing a quick staccato. As she closed the door behind her, she realized the music she could hear was not coming from her stereo. As she walked towards the front door, she could hear laughter.
