The crisp autumn air nipped at David’s cheeks as he walked to the park, a picnic basket swinging from his hand. He’d meticulously planned this afternoon, from the sandwiches to the vintage blanket. He was going to ask Emily to move in with him. He envisioned a future filled with shared mornings, cozy evenings, and a life together. He could barely contain the joy bubbling inside him. He felt as light as a feather, like anything was possible.

He found Emily already there, sitting on the blanket, her face radiant. She was talking animatedly with a man he didn't recognise, a charming man. David felt a rush of blood to his cheeks.

"Emily, darling, I'm here!" he called out, his voice a little too loud.

Emily's smile faltered. "David? What are you doing here?"

The man turned, his expression mirroring her surprise. "You're… David?"
