He had arranged a restaurant that overlooked the ocean, a place where the waves crashing on the beach provided a soothing soundtrack for the night. James checked his reflection in the car mirror one more time, and was pleased with what he saw. He felt energized, ready to face anything. He was going to ask Anna to marry him. He imagined the wedding, the honeymoon, the life they would build together. He felt as if he could fly.

He arrived at the restaurant, and was immediately led to his table. There she was. There was a man across from her. Her face was lit by candlelight, but her expression went from joy to shock.

“James?” she asked, her voice cracking.

The man turned, and James realized he was looking at a mirror image of his own surprise.
