The sunlight streaming through the window warmed Amelia’s face as she read the email for the tenth time. A wave of exhilaration washed over her, and she let out a silent whoop. Finally! Years of late nights studying, of sacrificing social life for academics, had paid off. The scholarship meant she could pursue her passion for marine biology without the crushing weight of debt. Her apartment would be less cramped, no more roommates. She could afford new equipment. She could breathe. She practically skipped to the university bursar’s office.

“Amelia Carter?” the clerk asked, her tone even and professional. Amelia, already picturing herself diving into the ocean, nodded enthusiastically.

The clerk’s expression softened with a hint of awkwardness. “There’s been an issue with your scholarship award.” Amelia's chest tightened.

"It seems the scholarship was awarded in error," the clerk continued, her voice a monotone. Amelia’s face flushed, and she felt a tremor pass through her.
