Gemotions

The crisp autumn air nipped at Elias's cheeks as he walked towards the university. He pulled the scholarship letter from his backpack, rereading the words, a joyous feeling bubbling inside. It meant freedom, a chance to escape the cycle of poverty that had defined his life. He pictured himself in a sleek new apartment, studying under the stars and in bright, sunny classrooms. He was going to make something of himself. He’d worked so hard. He quickened his pace, the anticipation building with each step.

He found the financial aid director, Mr. Davies, already waiting for him. Mr. Davies' usual jovial demeanor was replaced with a grave expression.

"Elias," Mr. Davies said, his voice unusually quiet, "I need to speak with you about your scholarship." Elias’s hands grew clammy.

"There's been a significant administrative error," Mr. Davies explained, avoiding eye contact. Elias felt a cold sensation spread through him.
