The tiny goldfish bowl sat on the kitchen counter, a silent testament to Olivia’s carefully crafted plan. She’d been researching freshwater fish for weeks, armed with articles about the calming effect of aquariums. She knew, she just knew, that she could bring Charlie around.

“Dinner’s ready!” she called out, a cheerful tone she hadn’t used in a while.

Charlie emerged from his room, looking tired. He'd been working overtime. This was the opening. He needed cheering up. She poured the pasta and vegetables into bowls.

"So," she began casually, "I was thinking… maybe a pet could be a nice addition to our life?" She watched him carefully, the corners of her mouth tilting upward.
