Sunlight streamed through the window as Ben rehearsed what he would say. He’d seen Sarah’s name on the university’s alumni page, and had found her address. He'd been envisioning this moment for weeks, maybe months, the reunion, the shared laughter, the way their easy camaraderie would instantly reignite. He straightened his tie and knocked on the door, his stomach doing somersaults.

The door opened, and a woman with familiar green eyes peered out. It *was* Sarah. He beamed, ready to launch into his meticulously planned greeting. "Sarah! It's me, Ben! Remember the summer camp? The time we accidentally set off the fire alarm?"

She tilted her head, her gaze questioning. "I… I don't think I do." Her brow furrowed, a polite, almost pitying expression on her face. "I'm sorry, I don't recognize you."

The words struck him with the force of a tidal wave. He felt the blood drain from his face, his carefully constructed facade crumbling. He took a step back, the world tilting slightly.
