The band struck up a familiar melody, and Clara’s shoulders relaxed. She had arrived early, anxious and jittery, but now, watching the guests mingle and the waiters glide around the room, a profound sense of well-being settled over her. The room was gorgeous, full of life, just like her parents.

She straightened her dress and scanned the room. She could see her mother's broad smile and her father, arms around her and nodding in agreement to something. It was time.
