He ran a hand over the worn leather of the old briefcase. The attic was a treasure trove, a repository of his father’s past. He’d come searching for something, anything, to feel closer to the man he'd lost. A typed letter, typed on a manual typewriter, caught his eye. It was addressed to "The University President," the date faded but still legible.

A wave of well-being washed over him as he read the words. His father, a man who'd often seemed stoic, had written about resigning his professorship to pursue a long-held dream of starting a rural writing retreat. The draft letter, a roadmap of ambition, detailed his reasons for leaving academia and outlined his plans for the future.

He picked up a pen and, without conscious thought, began to write in the margins. He scribbled notes, filled with ideas and affirmations, as if having a conversation with his father. He felt the weight of grief lighten, replaced by a surge of purpose.
