The sunlight streamed into the cluttered spare room, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah carefully lifted a cardboard box from the top of the pile. Inside, beneath faded newspaper clippings and old photo albums, she found a manila folder. On it, in her father’s elegant cursive, was written, ‘Financial Plans’.

Inside, instead of ledgers and spreadsheets, she found a single sheet of paper. It was a draft letter of resignation from his high-powered law firm. The words, filled with an unexpected warmth, spoke of a desire to spend more time with family and to prioritize personal fulfillment.

A giggle escaped her lips. She could almost hear her father's booming laughter, imagine his conspiratorial wink. He'd never told her about this hidden part of his life. A feeling of lightness filled her chest; he'd always seemed so serious. Now, she understood him better.
