“Almost there, buddy,” Marcus said aloud, patting his dog's head. He and Sparky had been looking forward to this outing for days. He was sure the cherry tree he'd planted was flourishing. He could almost taste the cherries.

His legs seemed to become leaden as he approached. An unfamiliar pit of emptiness spread out before him. The sun seemed to have dimmed. The bright green canopy was gone. He felt… nothing.

Then, Sparky nudged his hand. Marcus ruffled the dog’s fur, and then he smiled and said to him, “Let’s find a place to play fetch, shall we?”
