A wave of heat surged through David as he opened the door. The delivery person simply smiled and handed him a vibrant arrangement of roses. No card. He breathed deeply, inhaling the sweet, heady aroma. He knew the roses were for him, a quiet gesture of… something.

He sat on the couch, the flowers resting on the coffee table. He reached out and touched a velvety petal, the texture surprisingly soft against his calloused fingertips. His fingers ran over the deep crimson, and a warmth spread through him. The silence of the apartment seemed to soften.

He grabbed his phone, ready to send a thank you text message. He paused, fingers hovering over the screen. No name to address it to. He sighed and put the phone back down. He grabbed the phone again and then deleted the text. A grin stretched across his face. He'd wait.
