The temperature in the room had suddenly become intolerable. The air felt heavy, and the scent of the office cleaner, usually a familiar comfort, now seemed cloying and artificial. He found himself avoiding eye contact with David, his replacement.

Each task, each piece of instruction, felt like a painful relinquishment of control. He watched as David, with unnerving speed, absorbed the information. The feeling was akin to being present at his own funeral.
