Sweat slicked down Maya's back. David had been unusually quiet all evening, unusually… attentive. Dinner was a tense affair, the clinking of silverware amplifying the deafening silence. Then, as she cleared the plates, she heard it. A whisper, almost, from the living room. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

She edged into the room, her hand instinctively reaching for the light switch. There he was, hunched over his laptop, muttering under his breath. He looked up, startled, and the screen flickered off. She saw a flash of Cyrillic script. Her breath hitched.

"What were you…" she started, her voice catching. She couldn't finish the sentence. A cold dread settled in her stomach, a feeling of invasion and betrayal. She retreated, needing air, needing to escape the suffocating presence of his knowledge.
