The elevator doors opened, and Marcus was immediately confronted with the unsettling sound. He’d been rehearsing his sales pitch in his head, mentally preparing for a grueling meeting. Now, the smooth flow of his routine was shattered. His wife, Sarah, was talking on the phone in a language he didn't recognise.

He entered their apartment, and Sarah, mid-conversation, quickly switched to English. She looked flustered. He followed her into the bedroom, his eyes searching her face. He felt like he’d stumbled upon a secret, a private space she'd kept hidden from him.

“Who was that?” he asked, his voice tighter than he intended.
