The first sign was a misplaced dictionary, tucked discreetly under the sofa. The second was the sudden appearance of strange snacks in the pantry. Then, as Daniel was about to leave for work one day, he overheard it. A phone conversation in a dialect he hadn't heard since his childhood.

He was stunned. His wife, Emily, had always seemed so…uninterested in that part of his life. He returned to the kitchen, pretending to have forgotten something. Emily quickly ended her call. Her cheeks flushed.

“What was that?” he demanded, his voice trembling. He felt a deep sense of unease, a feeling like a carefully constructed reality was crumbling around him.
