It had started with small things. New cookbooks, different music playlists. Now, as Alex pulled into the driveway, the unmistakable sound drifted from their open window. It was the language of his grandparents, a language he’d associated with their remote village and his childhood visits.

He sat in the car, unwilling to move. He felt a chill, a profound sense of wrongness. He didn't want this intrusion into the quiet life they'd built, free from the echoes of his past. He remained in the car, waiting for the sound to cease.

He was eventually forced to enter the house, and was greeted by a nervous smile from his partner.
